Geschichte des BMW 3200 S

So hätte wohl der Maler Peter Paul Rubens einen Luxuswagen gezeichnet. Im Volksmund wurde er passenderweise "Barockengel“ getauft. Von seinem Anfang als 501 mit 72 PS, entwickelte BMW immer stärkere Motoren, die zur Produktionseinstellung 1963 in die Topversion 3200 S mündete mit 3,2 Liter V8 Motor mit 2 Doppelfallstromvergasern und 160 PS. Die Werbeabteilung von BMW sprach „von der Visitenkarte der deutschen Gesellschaft“ und zum Produktionsende sogar von „konstruktive Meisterleistung, die Bewunderung verdient“. Sie wird angesichts ihrer Vollkommenheit auch nicht dadurch geschmälert, dass ihre Schöpfer der Verwirklichung ihres Zieles den Vorrang vor wirtschaftlichen Gesichtspunkten geben durften“. Die runden Formen brachte die Karosserieabteilung zur Verzweiflung und führten zu einem Verlust von 5.000 DM (bei einem Verkaufspreis von ca. 21.000 DM) für jedes gebaute Fahrzeug. Fast wäre BMW dadurch in den Konkurs getrieben. Der BMW 3200 S ist aber ein grandioses Fahrzeug. Viel Liebe zum Detail steckt in ihm, alles wirkt massiv und teuer. Der Alu Motor im 3200 S klingt wie ein großvolumiger V8, sein aufwendiges Fahrwerk erweist sich als kurvenstabil. Zweifellos aber gehört ein V8 – gerade in der späten Ausführung – zu den komfortabelsten und langstreckentauglichsten Autos seiner Zeit. Und mit seinen 160 PS hatte er sogar 10 PS mehr als der BMW 507 und 20 PS mehr als der BMW 503. Nicht nur beim Auto Quartett ein unschätzbarer Vorteil.

Geschichte des hier angebotenen BMW 3200 S

Dieser Wagen wurde am 14.11.1962 in Berlin mit dem Kennzeichen B-LD 911 das erste Mal zugelassen. Als gesuchte Besonderheit war er werksseitig mit einem Schiebedach ausgestattet, was bei voll geöffnetem Dach, ihn fast zu einem Cabriolet macht. Im Laufe der Zeit wechselte er 4 mal den Besitzer, bis er 1987 bei seinem letzten Eigentümer gelandet ist. Es handelt sich hier um einen BMW Sammler und dieses Fahrzeug war ein Bestandteil dieser Sammlung. Und er wurde auch benutzt und gefahren. Mittlerweile ist leider die Karosserie ein wenig in Mitleidenschaft gezogen. Die Kotflügel bedürfen einer Sanierung, der Lack platzt hier und da ab, der Chrom ist patiniert, die Sitze könnten einen Neubezug vertragen. Der Unterboden ist noch gut in Schuß, die Technik funktioniert, aber auch hier sollte zumindest eine große Inspektion vorgenommen werden. Kurzum eine gute Basis für eine Restauration „light“ mit anschließender Neulackierung.

Resümee

Im Vergleich zur Konkurrenz aus Schwaben ist der BMW 3200 absolut ebenbürtig. Der Motor ist das Sahnestück und selbst die Mercedes Limousinen aus dieser Zeit konnten den BMW nicht das Wasser reichen. Alles wirkt wie aus dem Vollen gefräst. Für uns absolut unverständlich, wieso der BMW im Vergleich zum Mercedes so unterbewertet ist. Aus unserer Sicht: Ist der BMW 3200 S eine unbedingte Kaufempfehlung!

History of the BMW 3200 S

This is probably how the painter Peter Paul Rubens would have drawn a luxury car. It was appropriately christened the "Baroque Angel" in the vernacular. From its beginnings as a 501 with 72 hp, BMW developed ever more powerful engines, culminating in the top-of-the-range 3200 S version with a 3.2 litre V8 engine with 2 twin downdraft carburettors and 160 hp when production ceased in 1963. BMW's advertising department spoke of "the calling card of German society" and at the end of production even of "a design masterpiece that deserves admiration”. In view of its perfection, it is not diminished by the fact that its creators were allowed to give priority to the realisation of their goal over economic considerations". The round shapes drove the body department to despair and led to a loss of DM 5,000 (at a sales price of around DM 21,000) for every vehicle built. This almost drove BMW into bankruptcy. However, the BMW 3200 S is a marvellous vehicle. It has a lot of attention to detail, everything looks solid and expensive. The aluminium engine in the 3200 S sounds like a large-volume V8, its elaborate chassis proves to be stable on bends. There is no doubt, however, that a V8 - especially in the late version - was one of the most comfortable and long-distance capable cars of its time. And with its 160 hp, it even had 10 hp more than the BMW 507 and 20 hp more than the BMW 503.

History of the BMW 3200 S offered here

This car was registered for the first time on 14 November 1962 in Berlin with the registration number B-LD 911. As a sought-after speciality, it was equipped with a sliding roof at the factory, which makes it almost a convertible when the roof is fully open. In the course of time, it changed hands 4 times until it ended up with its last owner in 1987. This is a BMW collector who was used to drive his car. In the meantime, the bodywork has unfortunately suffered a little. The mudguards are in need of restoration, the paint is chipping here and there, the chrome is patinated and the seats could do with a new cover. The underbody is still in good shape, the technology works, but here, too, at least a major inspection should be carried out. In short, a good basis for a "light" restoration with subsequent repainting.

Summary

Compared to the competition from Swabia, the BMW 3200 is absolutely on a par. The engine is the cream of the crop and even the Mercedes saloons from this period couldn't hold a candle to the BMW. Everything seems to have been milled from the solid. For us, it is absolutely incomprehensible why the BMW is so undervalued compared to the Mercedes. From our point of view: The BMW 3200 S is an unconditional recommendation to buy!
